Movie Review: 700 Days of Battle Us vs. The Police

This blog was abandoned because I couldn't find times to write least open this blog. Everyday I have an exam that will continue until April :'>. I want to review a movie titled Bokutachi to Chuzai-san no 700 Nichi Sensou or as known as 700 Days of Battle Us vs. The Police. (WARNING!! SPOILER ALERT!!)

700 Days of Battle Us vs. The Police is a 108 minutes duration Japanese comedy movie written by Yuichi Fukuda and Directed by Renpei Tsukamoto, released on April 5th 2008.

The movie is about a conflict between high school students and a local police, in a small town in Yamagata prefecture on 1979. The conflict started when a new police officer (Kuranosuke Sasaki) just transferred to the town. The new police officer applied a new rule about speed limit on one of the road in the town. Saijo (Takuya Ishida), a troublesome student, was arrested because he considered broke the speed limit when he rode his motorcycle through the road although he thinks he was driving at normal speed. He felt that he was treated unfairly. Then, along with his friends, Mamachari or Granny Bike (Hayato Ichihara), Inoue (Kento Kaku), Chiba (Tomohiro Waki), Takaaki (Masaki Kaji), Jamie (Satoshi Tomiura) and helped by Tsujimura (Yu Koyanagi) were planned to pull a prank on the police officer. Then, begin the war between the students and the police officer.

The students and the police officer keep pulling pranks on each other until one day, their supposed to be base camp can’t be used anymore. They moved to a local cafe and meet a beautiful waitress there. Mamachari and the others seems to be fallen for the waitress, thus often come to the cafe even wearing a nice suit just to meet her. After some embarrasing event including Saijo’s book, Mamachari find out that the beautiful waitress at the cafe is actually the police officer’s wife. While Inoue, seems to fall in love at the first sight with Minako, the police officer’s sister in law.

One day, Saijo get into an accident that made him hospitalized. There, he met Mika-chan, a little girl who is sick but didn’t want to do a surgery because she was scared. Mika really want to see a fireworks that being displayed on the next town, but can’t because she was not allowed to go out of the hospital. Then, Saijo made a promise with her, if Mika see fireworks from the hospital, she would do her surgery. Because Saijo couldn’t go out of the hospital, he asked Mamachari and the others to steal some fireworks and lit it near the hospital. At first, Mamachari and the others were hesitated to do it because it was a serious crime. But after knowing that it was for Mika, they finally do it. The plan was almost failed because of the police officer, but they manage to light the fireworks. Then they got arrested because of thief. But suddenly, other fireworks appeared. Secretly, the police officer knows about Mamachari’s plan and bought the fireworks so they didn’t need to steal some fireworks. After that, Mika-chan do her surgery and healthy again, and the war between the students and the police officer continue.

Although the title is 700 days of battle, the movie only tells the first 108 days. This movie is really funny, it could make us laughing with the stupidity and absurdities displayed on the movie. The plot was simple, yet enchanting in its own ways. The youth spirits and close friendship between the characters really shown in the movie. Every characters have their own short story outside the main plot which make their bonds seems stronger. The clothes style, old furniture and simple technology support the background setting of year 70s. Although some of the act seems forced and unnatural, it didn’t stop us from enjoying the movie. Not just comedies, this movie also taught us about the meaning of friendship and helping each other in happy and sad.

Friends are like a cup of coffee in the morning that keeps you awake to go through the day. I think this movie is really worth watching. Especially for us who is still at school.
